Swiss need Bach to back wins

- By DAVID HYDE

SWITZERLAND women set up a huge final group-stage clash against France after beating Iceland women 2-1 thanks to a goal from Ramona Bachmann. The Swiss now know a positive result against the French, who beat Iceland in their first game, could see them progress into the quarter-finals. Having lost their first game to Austria, Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s women knew a win was needed to stand any chance in their first appearance at a European Championship. But it was Iceland who took the lead through Fanndis Fridriksdottir. The midfielder stuck a low, composed finish past Gaelle Thalmann. Their lead would only last 10 minutes, though, as Switzerland soon took control of the tie. And it was Chelsea’s Bachmann who played a part in the turn around. It was her pass that found the nations all-time top scorer Lara Dickenmann to bring the scores level. Then Bachmann nodded home just after half-time to give Switzerland hope going into the biggest match of their tournament.
