WINTER GARDENS ARE TAYLOR-MADE

- ■ DARTS

DARTS legend Phil Taylor is set to bid an emotional farewell to the Winter Gardens at the World Matchplay in Blackpool.

Taylor is aiming for an amazing 16th title as he makes his final appearance at the venue.

The Power, 56, will retire at the end of the year and has enjoyed 15 wins in 23 years of the World Matchplay, as well as hitting two nine-dart finishes at the North West venue.

“I have got good memories from there and it’s my favourite tournament,” said Taylor (above) who kicks off his challenge against Gerwyn Price tonight.

“I do love the Matchplay so I’m looking forward to finishing there.

“It’s the place itself. The crowds have always been good at Blackpool but I love that venue. It’s something I fell in love with. I’m going to enjoy it.” World champion and world No.1 Michael van Gerwen, 28, is aiming to become only the second player to win three successive World Matchplay titles. The Dutchman is pumped up after his World Series of Darts triumphs in Shanghai and Las Vegas this month and is in confident mood before his opening clash with Stephen Bunting tomorrow night. “Last year I won against Phil Taylor and I hope I can retain the title. It’s a format and a tournament that I like, so I’m looking forward to it,” said Van Gerwen.
