LAST LAUGH: Jadeja SPINNERS Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja shared six wickets as India thumped Sri Lanka by 304 runs inside four days to win the first Test in Galle.

The hosts, chasing a mammoth 550 for victory, folded for 245 in the final session after opener Dimuth Karunaratne had been dismissed for 97.

Asela Gunaratne, who had broken his thumb and was ruled out of the series, and captain Rangana Herath, who suffered a hand injury on Friday, did not bat.

India, the world’s top-ranked Test side, had declared on 240-3 after Virat Kohli completed his

17th Test hundred.

The captain, who had resumed on 76, remained unbeaten on 103 after reaching the milestone with a single off spinner Dilruwan Perera.

It ended a poor run for Kohli, who hit five fours and one six, after he had totalled just 49 runs in his previous six Test innings.

Mohammed Shami bowled Upul Tharanga for

10, a relief for Kohli who had dropped him at second slip in the same over.

Debutant Danushka Gunathilaka was out for two, hitting Umesh Yadav straight into the hands of Cheteshwar Pujara at square leg to make it 29-2.

A solid 79-run stand between Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis settled things down but India came back strongly after lunch with two quick wickets from left-armer Jadeja, who is ranked No.1 in the world in the longest format.

Mendis, who made 36, was given not out on a caught behind appeal but India successfully overturned the umpire’s decision on review.

Former captain Angelo Mathews fell soon after, mishitting Jadeja to be caught by Hardik Pandya.

Karunaratne and Niroshan Dickwella added

101 for the fifth wicket before Dickwella was caught by wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha to become Ashwin’s first victim of the innings.

Karunaratne swept the off-spinner back on to his stumps and Ashwin, who took 3-65, also dismissed Nuwan Pradeep without scoring.

Jadeja wrapped things up when Lahiru Kumara skied an attempted slog to end with 3-61.

The second Test starts on Thursday in Colombo. GONE SOUTH: Dean Elgar cannot believe he has dropped Jennings
