LINDELOF’S GOT ICE IN HIS VEINS

- ■ by PAUL HETHERINGTON

VICTOR LINDELOF aims to be Manchester United’s Mr Cool.

The £31million 6ft 2in signing from Benfica believes one of his strengths is the calmness he brings to the defence.

And Sweden’s centre-half knows it would be pretty cool to win a trophy early in his United career by lifting the European Super Cup in Skopje on Tuesday night. Ahead of the clash with Champions League winners Real Madrid i n Macedonia, Lindelof, 23, said:

“I think I’m quite a calm player.

“I like to have the ball at my feet. I think I’m quite good in that situation and at reading the game.

“I think I give my players in front of me quite a calmness, knowing I’m back there trying to protect them as well as I can. “And it feels great to know the coach Jose Mourinho wanted me here for so long. That makes me very happy.

“He’s a great coach and for me to be able to work with him is a great opportunity for me. “United are one of the biggest clubs in the world and always want to win titles. “That’s also my goal. I’ve come here to win titles – that’s what the club wants.”

To win their first trophy of the season, United will have to get the better of a special talent in Real coach Zinedine Zidane (below). That is the view of Old Trafford legend and Zidane’s fellow Frenchman Eric Cantona. Analysing the job Zidane has done at Real, Cantona said: “Zizou solved football’s ultimate squaring of the circle – transforming a sum of talents into a fabulous football team.

“It should be enough to silence all those who were dubious about his soft-spoken approach.

“His motto is: ‘I am not managing egos, I am managing personalities’. With five major trophies in one-and-a-half years, he must be doing something right.” United are unlikely to face their former ace Cristiano Ronaldo in Skopje.

He was given an extended break after playing for Portugal in the Confederations Cup in Russia. There has been speculation about Ronaldo’s future after his tax issues in Spain but Zidane said: “I believe he is going to stay.”
