It’s one L of a scam

TEST FRAUD ON THE RISE

- ■ by MATTHEW DAVIS sunday@dailystar.co.uk

HUNDREDS of learner drivers are trying to get imposters to take the L-test for them.

Figures from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) show 10 people a week attempt to scam their way to a full driving licence.

The number suspected of fraud in the practical driving test was 114 last year – a six-year high – which resulted in police making a total of 13 arrests.

There were also 414 cases where officials were suspicious of foul play in the driving theory test, where candidates must answer a string of questions on a computer about the Highway

Code and on-road scenarios.

These incidents resulted in officers arresting 99 people.

This year, Regine Tezangi, 52, of Hackney, London, was jailed for seven months after admitting taking the driving test for five people at centres in Hither Green, south-east London and Sidcup, Kent.

Last year saw jail sentences handed out to a gang of four men who charged “clients” up to £2,500 to take the practical or theory tests for them across the West Midlands. Andy Rice, DVSA’s Head of Counter-Fraud and Investigations, said: “We have stringent measures in place to detect fraud and are working closely with the police.”

The fraud stats were released as the Government announced that learners will now be allowed on to Britain’s motorways.

A law change will mean novices can take lessons on motorways with an approved driving instructor in a dualcontrol car from next year.

It is hoped this will provide a broader range of real-life experiences and better prepare beginners for independent motoring when they pass their test. Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said: “Younger drivers are up to seven times more likely to be killed or seriously injured compared with drivers over 25.

“Allowing learners to drive on motorways will help them develop a practical understanding of how to use motorways safely before driving independently.”

Learners are currently not allowed on motorways until they have passed their test.
