Frankel’s son wins Rose

- ■ by JASON HEAVEY

FRANKUUS brought back memories of his brilliant sire to win the Rose of Lancaster Stakes.

The three-year-old son of Frankel finally bloomed under a canny ride from Joe Fanning at Haydock.

They dictated affairs from pillar to post to score at odds of 8-1.

Frankuus set a brisk gallop in the Group Three over an extended mile and a quarter and gained an even greater advantage at the top of the home straight.

Mount Logan emerged from the pack as his nearest challenger but Mark Johnston’s charge had already flown and held on by three-quarters of a length. The previously unbeaten Laraaib, who had won three on the spin for the Owen Burrows team, could only finish third – another five lengths in arrears.

Johnston said: “I thought he was a little bit stuck between two stools in that he wasn’t quite top class but he was too high for handicaps.

“He’s been running good races, but last time was definitely his best run of the season.

“On paper he had a bit to find today but we knew he liked the track – he won here last year – and he had conditions in his favour. He does handle cut in the ground. All horses like good ground but not all appreciate some give.

“I will have to go back and think about what to do next but it would be nice to get another Group win out of him because its been frustrating for his owners.”

Meanwhile, Tajaanus fended off his rivals to take the Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket.

Richard Hannon’s filly made a seamless graduation from winning a Listed race at Sandown last month to securing victory in this Group Three over seven furlongs.

Dane O’Neill gave a no-nonsense ride to the 10-1 chance, who was sweetly pitched towards the stands side rail from the start.
