Jordan has got a lot to shout about

- ■ by STEVE MILLAR

JORDAN PICKFORD is having a roaring time in his No.1 role as the most expensive British goalkeeper ever.

Everton’s £25million summer capture from Sunderland is determined his new club will be in with a shout of major honours this season.

And if that means barking out the orders to any superstar within earshot, then so be it.

Not even Wayne Rooney escapes the Pickford hairdryer, with the rising England star already making history in his first few weeks between the sticks – and giving stick.

Pickford, 23, is an integral part of a defence which has now kept clean sheets in the opening four games for the first time ever. Not bad for starters then.

And there is more bellowing to come from the player who admits that his old goalkeeping coach at Sunderland Mark Prudhoe taught him how to shoot from the lip.

Pickford said: “He was great. He will ring me with advice and I listen. He told me never to be quiet on the pitch. I have to keep organising.

“You can’t let your mind drift. That is why I am always talking to the lads in front of me. As long as you are involved in the game you should be all right.

“If you watch me you will see I am always demanding in the right way to keep the ball as far away as possible from me. If we do that then I don’t have to make saves.

“It’s all about talking and making saves. Does anybody tell me to give it a rest? Not yet. But I hope they do because that will mean I am doing my job. Clean sheets and three points will make me happy.

“As a keeper it is part of the job. If you’re quiet then you might be making problems for yourself.

“But if you do it in the right way and the lads know what to expect, it will work.

“As long as we keep the ball out of the net we are doing our job as a unit.” Talking aside, Pickford showed his talent with two gobsmacking saves in the Toffees’ Europa League qualifying first-leg win over Hajduk Split on Thursday night.

And he revealed he had a few choice words for Rooney when the striker played a risky crossfield pass in his own half which was intercepted.

Ahead of tomorrow night’s clash at Manchester City, Pickford added: “I just said, ‘Come on, keep going. Keep switched on’.

“Wayne was playing in the hole when we were defending set-pieces so I have to organise where he goes. We were under the cosh. It’s my job. I’m helping them as I can see more of the pitch than they can. They will turn around and give me a thumbs up.”

Pickford is delighted to be one of a host of mega-money signings this summer as boss Ronald Koeman looks to turn Everton into a force capable of challenging for the game’s major honours.

But Pickford’s first target is shouting down the old enemy from across Stanley Park – Liverpool.

He said: “We have spent a lot of money. We are expecting to win.

It would be massive for the club if we could finish above Liverpool. There is nothing we’d want to do more.

“The City game is what the Premier League is all about. You’ve got to thrive on those big games.

“We’ve got to go there with a good gameplan and try to execute it.” Man City v Everton, Sky Sports Main Event, Tomorrow, 8pm
