CORONATION Street chiefs are working on a hard-hitting storyline in which Summer Spellman collapses after smoking Spice.

The ITV soap will show the schoolgirl being dared to smoke something by tearaway Simon Barlow, which turns out to be the “zombie” drug.

Simon finds a joint in the street and the pair have no idea what it contains.

But in shocking scenes, Summer collapses minutes after inhaling the potent drug.

The harrowing plot echoes real-life scenes in Manchester, where Corrie is based.

Earlier this year footage emerged of people high on Spice, either standing like statues or slumped over in the street, inset. Police have since launched a crackdown on drug taking and antisocial behaviour in the city.

A Corrie insider said: “There is a massive Spice problem in Manchester city centre, especially among the homeless community, so it felt very current to feature the drug in this storyline.”

They added: “The scenes are very upsetting.

“Summer has no idea what she is smoking but is so desperate to fit in following her move to Weatherfield that she goes through with the dare to impress Simon.

“It’s a stupid thing to do and the fallout is going to have a huge impact on her young life.” Summer, who is played by Matilda Freeman, is currently in the process of being adopted by vicar Billy Mayhew and his boyfriend Todd Grimshaw.

But while the couple are busy playing happy families a dark secret from Billy’s past will lead to him being arrested.

Our source added: “The Spice incident with Summer is only the half of it. “There’s also the matter of Simon giving her the drug, so there are going to be huge repercussions for the Barlow family too. “As they are coming to terms with what’s happened Billy is arrested. It will jeopardise their adoption plans. “Summer has been through so much and sadly it’s only going to get worse for her.”
