Aguero takes his place with legends

-

TAKE a bow Sergio Aguero. The most prolific goalscorer in Manchester City’s 137-year history.

And stand up, too, Roberto Mancini for a well-deserved round of applause for signing the Argentine superstar back in the summer of 2011.

Mancini’s outlay was £38million to bring Aguero to The Etihad from Atletico Madrid – a gilt-edged investment which in seven magnificent seasons has been paid back over and over again.

Aguero is not only City’s joint-record hitman with 177 strikes to draw level with golden oldie Eric Brook (right), he’s a professional footballer from top to toe of his 5ft 8ins pocket battleship frame.

There’s no scandal. No tantrums. No sulks. No photographs splashed across the front pages instead of the back.

Sergio does all his talking on the pitch he has graced in England since making his debut for City on August 15, six-and-a-bit years ago. Sky pundit Charlie Nicholas had predicted that Aguero would be the worst signing of the summer.

Yet in his first game against Swansea, those words immediately came back to haunt him.

Aguero scored twice in a

4-0 Premier League hammering and City’s new striker had hit the headlines for the first time. It most certainly wouldn’t be the last.

He was off and running towards the record, collecting two

Premier League titles and a League

Cup double along the way. And who will ever forget that magical moment when, at the end of his first season, Aguero scored the 94th-minute winner against QPR to clinch City their first title in 44 years? The “AGUEROOOO!” bellow of Martin Tyler ranks alongside Kenneth Wolstenholme’s “They think it’s all over…”

I must admit I slumped to my dodgy knees and cried buckets when the magnitude of that heart-pumping, mind-numbing goal sank in and City were crowned champions. On behalf of City fans everywhere I can only say, ‘Thanks Sergio’. STEVE MILLAR
