Kee is spot on as Stanley rise to third

-

ACCRINGTON climbed into the automatic promotion places after a 2-0 win at 10-man Crewe Alexandra.

Stanley were quick out of the blocks and Billy Kee (below) put them ahead from the penalty spot after three minutes when Kayden Jackson was brought down by Michael Raynes, who was dismissed late on for a second booking.

And they doubled their advantage in the 11th minute when Dave Richards could only parry Jackson’s angled drive and Jordan Clark headed home the rebound.

Exeter dropped out of the top three following a second home defeat in a week.

Tom Pope’s 25th-minute strike gave Port Vale a

1-0 win as the Grecians slipped to fourth place.

Luton remain top despite being held to a

0-0 draw at Crawley as Notts County failed to capitalise.

Ryan Yates cancelled out Hallam Hope’s opener for Carlisle in a 1-1 draw.

Harry Smith’s second goal of the season gave Swindon a 1-0 win over Wycombe at the County Ground to move them into the play-off positions.

And a first away defeat of the season saw the Chairboys drop to fifth in the ladder.

Newport’s Shawn McCoulsky levelled with 21 minutes remaining to earn a 1-1 draw with Mansfield at Rodney Parade.

Forest Green made it two wins from two with a

2-1 victory at Stevenage. Matt Godden netted his third goal in two games to put the hosts ahead.

But secondhalf goals from Reece Brown and Christian Doidge turned the game on its head. Coventry were held to a 0-0 draw by Colchester, who had Tom Lapslie sent off, while Morecambe and Grimsby also played out a stalemate. Danny Wright’s 30th-minute goal handed Cheltenham a

1-0 win over Lincoln. Otis Khan struck nine minutes from time to cancel out Simeon Akinola’s opener for Barnet and secure a 1-1 draw for Yeovil.

Jevani Brown and Uche Ikpeazu were on target to send Cambridge to a 2-1 win over Chesterfield after Kristian Dennis had put the Spireites ahead.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY skipper Glenn Loovens was red-carded as the pressure on boss Carlos Carvalhal intensified.

The Owls have now won only one of their last six games.

And they were up against it from the moment Loovens was given his marching orders in the fourth minute for bringing down Matej Vydra (right).

The Czech striker and scored the subsequent penalty.

Wednesday showed spirit and at least stayed in the match until the 86th minute when Bradley Johnson sealed victory.

Carvalhal conceded the call on Loovens was correct – but bemoaned how they were denied what even Rams boss Gary Rowett called “an obvious penalty” later in the first half.

Craig Forsyth appeared to push Steven Fletcher in the back.

Carvalhal said: “It makes a massive impact because it could be 1-1 and Derby will play with 10 players.

“This is the fourth game in a row where we have had critical decisions go against us.

“Fletcher was pushed, it was a clear penalty.

“He is a striker and wants to signals in the game.

“With a performance like that – with heart, soul and commitment – it makes me believe the future will be better.”

Last week Vydra needed just 24 seconds to score at home against Nottingham Forest.

And he was involved in another dramatic start yesterday.

He burst into the box in the fourth minute and was fouled by Loovens, who minute, Gary Hooper got in on the right.

But the angle was tight and Curtis Davies slid in to put the ball behind. Johnny Russell forced Westwood into a diving save just before the break only to be booked after the restart for diving. But the Scot nearly set up a second with a cross that Vydra put wide in the 57th minute.

Carson turned away a Barry Bannan shot before Chris Martin’s flick in the 71st minute was saved by Westwood’s right foot.

Derby were far from convincing but they finally put the game away in the 86th minute when Russell played in Johnson.

He turned to beat Carson from 10 yards to crown a win which propelled County from 13th to eighth in the table.

Rowett said: “I’ve really mixed feelings.

“I gave the players a piece of my mind at half-time because it was really, really sloppy.

“We were marginally better in the second half, but I was pleased to get the second goal.

“I said to the players at half-time, ‘You’re very lucky it’s 1-0 because it could easily have been 1-1’.

“It was good play by us for the penalty but they also felt they could have had a penalty, it looked an obvious penalty. I’m not sure why Fletcher would go down in that position if it wasn’t.

“But there’s a lot more to come from us.”
