A Barnes stormer is bad news for Carlos
HARVEY BARNES netted an absolute screamer to deny Sheffield Wednesday a much-needed victory.
Owls boss Carlos Carvalhal is under increasing pressure at Hillsborough and Barnes’ 67th-minute leveller did little to help his cause.
The England youth international found space on the edge of the box and sent a sensational curling effort into the top corner, leaving Kieren Westwood with no chance in goal.
That cancelled out Adam Reach’s first-half opener for the home side.
Carvalhal said: “I think the highlights will show the history of this game. If you see the highlights, I believe it will show a lot of chances from our part.
“We had more threats, we played near the Barnsley goal. The opponents played with organisation, of course, they scored one goal.”
Both sides went into the game having won only one of their previous five games.
And it was the hosts who started brightly and Reach gave them the lead.
With little over 10 minutes left in the first half, Gary Hooper dribbled past several Barnsley players and gave the ball to Reach, whose shot looped over a helpless Adam Davies in goal.
Despite the setback against his former team, Davies was in inspired form, making a fantastic close-range save from Tom Lees.
Paul Heckingbottom’s side were being put under huge pressure after the break with the hosts looking to put the game to bed.
Barry Bannan tried a delicate chipped effort but Andy Yiadom got back to head off the line and behind.
Leicester loanee Barnes went close to levelling but his shot clipped the bar.
He found the net a few minutes later though to earn Barnsley a point.
Heckingbottom said: “I always want three points but I think we have to sort of take that in the end, especially after the start we had.
“The determination, the running power, the willingness to put their body on the line is what got us back into that game.”
