GUARDIOLA: WATCH THESE KIDS GO

- ■ by HARRY PRATT

CHEER WE GO: Scorer Foden leads England celebrations PEP GUARDIOLA claims England Under-17s’ World Cup triumph can be the foundation for sustained glory at senior level.

The Manchester City boss, thrilled that Etihad youngster Phil Foden scored twice in the final against Spain, believes the future looks bright for the Three Lions.

Comparing it to his own country’s domination of the world scene between 2008 and 2012, Spaniard Guardiola predicts something similar awaits this crop of kids.

Spain regularly fell short in big competitions – until they started winning silverware at junior level. That same group then ended a 44-year wait for a major trophy – lifting the Euros in 2008 and 2012 and the World Cup in between.

Guardiola said: “Big congratulations to the manager and to all the staff and players because for English football they really needed that.

“It’s the step they need. It happened to us in Spain. We were always in the last 16 or the quarters.

“Then they arrived and won everything. That’s why it’s so important to win today.

“These guys will grow and play in future World Cups and they will know what to do.”

On heroic City starlet Foden, Guardiola said: “Phil has been with us since the beginning of the season. He trains with us every single day.

“He is just 17 but he is a player in our squad and he’s in the locker room with the guys. It’s the best way to learn.”
