LABOUR MP Diane Abbott was ridiculed last night when she wrongly claimed Brits can fight in the armed forces at 16, writes Jessica Haworth.

The politician, 64, made the comments in a Facebook video in which she called for the national voting age to be lowered.

Ms Abbott was speaking in support of a Parliament debate last week to discuss allowing 16-year-olds the right to vote.

But she was blasted online after claiming Brits can fight in the forces at the same age.

She was trolled by one Facebook user who wrote: “You can’t fight at 16. That is international law. Straight away wrong with a simple fact.” ONE in five workers are being paid below the voluntary living wage, leaving them struggling to escape in-work poverty, a new report reveals.

Around 22% of jobs in the UK pay below the voluntary rate of

£9.75 an hour in London and

£8.45 in the rest of the UK, both well above the statutory national living wage of £7.50 for over

25-year-olds, said KPMG.

The auditing giant estimated that 5.5million workers were on less than the voluntary rate, down by 100,000 on a year ago – the first reduction in five years. A GIRL who suffered critical injuries in an incident at a house on Friday morning has died.

The seven-year-old was treated by paramedics after the emergency services were called.

But police yesterday confirmed she died following the tragedy in Wimbledon, south London.

A post-mortem will take place later.

Antiques dealer Robert Peters, 55, earlier appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court charged with attempted murder. The child had not died at the time the hearing took place.
