Tories suspend Elphicke
THE Westminster sex scandal has deepened after Tory MP Charlie Elphicke was suspended when “serious allegations” about him emerged.
The Conservatives are apparently cooperating with the police after a complaint was lodged – allegedly by a young Tory activist.
Mr Elphicke has been Dover’s MP since 2010 and is a member of the Commons Treasury Select Committee. His suspension is the latest crisis to hit Westminster following the shock leak of the “dirty dossier”.
The file contains claims accusing 36 Tory MPs of inappropriate sexual behaviour, including six Cabinet members.
Defence Secretary Michael Fallon quit on Wednesday after facing accusations of sexual misconduct.
He admitted that his behaviour had “fallen short”.
A veteran Tory MP yesterday warned of a witch-hunt at Westminster.
Sir Roger Gale said MPs and other prominent figures were on a “hiding to nothing” as it was difficult to refute claims about alleged incidents years ago.
But Labour MP Harriet Harman has said that it is not a witch-hunt.
She said: “There are a lot of men saying this has been blown out of all proportion, it’s a witch-hunt. No, it’s not a witch-hunt, it’s long overdue.”
Brexit Minister Mark Garnier is to face an investigation into whether he broke ministerial rules after he asked his secretary to buy sex toys. Mr Garnier admitted calling the same employee “sugar-tits”, but denies it amounted to harassment.
And suspended Labour MP Kelvin Hopkins said he “categorically” denies claims of sexual harassment.
