WERE CATS SEAN OF SUCCESS?

-

IT WAS June 2015 and Sunderland were about to do what they always seem to be doing – appointing a new manager. The name in the Stadium of Light frame was Sean Dyche and they were convinced he would leave Burnley – with his assistant Ian Woan – and succeed Dick Advocaat on Wearside. Then Advocaat, who had said he was retiring from the game, performed a shock U-turn and returned to Sunderland. They had been trying to persuade him to stay after he had led the club to Premier League safety. So Advocaat, 70, now manager of Holland after being taking charge at Fenerbahce – so much for retirement – continued with the Blacks Cats in what turned out to be a brief return.

And Sunderland missed out on Dyche, 46 (left), now widely regarded as one of the hottest managerial properties in the business. The Burnley boss, currently being linked with Everton, was also considered by Leicester and could be a target for West Ham. Sunderland go in to today’s derby at Middlesbrough looking once again for a new manager after sacking Simon Grayson. They might just be thinking about the one that got away.
