Mark hails underdogs on big day for upsets
OXFORD CITY manager Mark Jones had nothing but praise for his giant-killing non-league side after they won 1-0 at League Two outfit Colchester.
Matt Paterson’s strike just after half-time sent the National League South club through to the second round for only the second time in their history.
Jones said: “Sometimes you just can’t write the script. You have to give tremendous credit to the players, the way they stuck at it. These players have put their name down in the history of the club.”
Non-league Maidstone dumped League Two outfit Cheltenham out with a 4-2 win. Goals from Delano Sam-Yorke, Joe Piggott and Zavon Hines put them 3-0 up.
Kevin Dawson pulled one back but Sam-Yorke doubled his tally before seeing red.
An Alex Finney own goal halved the deficit for Cheltenham, who then had Dawson dismissed.
“We showed what we are about,” said boss Jay Saunders.
Ten-man Ebbsfleet United let a 2-0 lead slip before falling to a 6-2 defeat at home to Doncaster, with Chris Bush seeing red late on but there was more to cheer elsewhere from fellow non-league clubs.
Seventh-tier side Slough produced a stunning 6-0 win at Gainsborough while Dan Holman struck late as Boreham Wood beat League One Blackpool 2-1.
Blackburn eventually overcame Barnet in a 3-1 win while Shrewsbury and Stevenage posted 5-0 wins against Aldershot and Nantwich respectively.
Rochdale won 4-0 against Bromley while AFC Fylde overcame fellow non-league side Kidderminster 4-2.
Mansfield defeated Shaw Lane 3-1, Morecambe beat Hartlepool 3-0 and Wigan, FA Cup winners in 2013, edged Crawley in a 2-1 win while Carlisle came out on top in an entertaining 3-2 triumph over Oldham.
Bradford and Gateshead were 2-0 winners against Chesterfield and Chelmsford respectively, with Crewe beating Rotherham and Gillingham overcoming 10-man Leyton Orient by a 2-1 scoreline.
There were 1-0 victories for Yeovil, Plymouth, Forest Green, AFC Wimbledon, Luton and Hereford while two ties need replays after Peterborough United and Tranmere played out a 1-1 draw and Northampton and Scunthorpe ended goalless.
