Mart likes a smell of team spirit

- By BRENDAN KEANE

MARTIN O’NEILL reckons the Republic of Ireland’s famed team spirit can carry them through their World Cup qualifying play-off and take them all the way to Russia.

Ireland face Denmark in Copenhagen on Saturday before the return leg in Dublin on November 14.

And O’Neill reckons there is a unity in the squad which will help them through to next summer’s finals.

He said: “There is a togetherness about the side.

“What we have is epitomised by Seamus Coleman wanting to come over here and be in that squad even when he’s not playing.

“He feels this is really important to him.

“And it is not just him. Jon Walters came across too. That speaks volumes for what we’re trying to achieve.

“I wish togetherness could guarantee you wins. If only it did. The reality is we have to go and fight for everything.

“The players are not frightened of hard work. We can get beaten by Denmark – Christian Eriksen could turn something into a goal.

“But we know we have to fight because the prize is great. The boys that have experience of that from the Euros want to try and taste that experience again.”
