MALKY MACKAY has defended the performance of Matt Phillips during the 1-0 defeat to Holland.

The caretaker Scotland boss thinks the West Brom winger can be an alternative choice to injured Leigh Grittiths, despite not looking comfortable in the role.

Mackay said: “I thought he ran himself into the ground and did the unsung work.

“He was gutted not to score because he should have, but if you ask the two Dutch centre-backs was it an easy night against Matt then I don’t think so.”
