Davies suffered an ankle injury in the last play of the game.

Coach Gatland said: “To lose is obviously a diasppointment and we were sloppy at times but my players never gave up and kept Australia on their toes until the final whistle.”

Australia captain Michael Hooper said: “I like playing in Cardiff and so does all the team. It’s a great place to play in front of a noisy crowd.

“It’s never easy to win and play here. The Welsh took it to us but the boys dug deep.

“Obviously they’ve got new threats we haven’t seen before.

“We’re happy we could deal with those threats and get the win.”

Tatafu Polota-Nau, Adam Coleman, Michael Hooper and Beale claimed touchdowns for the Wallabies while Wales managed two from Steff Evans and Hallam Amos.
