REID: BARTON JIBE THE HUYT OF BAD TASTE

- ■ by PAUL HETHERINGTON

PETER REID has hit out at Joey Barton for his “cheap shot” attack on Everton caretaker manager David Unsworth. Former Manchester City midfielder Barton implied that Unsworth, 44, was overweight.

He likened Unsworth’s appearance to a steward, rather than a manager. But Everton legend Reid (left) now a consultant at Wigan, is disappointed with the critical comments from his fellow Merseysider.

Reidy said: “Joey Barton is from my neck of the woods – Huyton. He’s been a really good footballer and he’s making his way in the media world, which is great.

“But when you attack someone for his appearance it’s unbecoming, let’s say. “Whether David Unsworth is overweight or not, I don’t think he looks like a steward in any shape or form. Your appearance doesn’t matter – it’s what you do with the players.” Reid, 61, is currently promoting his new book about his career as a top player and manager – Cheer Up Peter Reid: My Autobiography.

He said: “David deserves a chance.

“I’m not saying he should be the Everton manager but his appearance shouldn’t come into it. What Joey said was a cheap shot.”

Unsworth is under consideration to take charge at Goodison until the end of the season, when Everton hope top choices Diego Simeone – at Atletico Madrid – and Watford’s Marco Silva could be available.
