Fans’ fave Joe gets Ed in gear

JOE McFadden credits Ed Balls for his success on Strictly.

The Holby City actor, 42, has been a surprise hit this year and is third-favourite to win behind Alexandra Burke and Debbie McGee.

He is partnered with show professional Katya Jones – who helped former Labour man Ed to the 10th week of last year’s series against all the odds. Joe said: “When Ed came to rehearsals he gave me some performance notes and it really helped me. When Ed did the show he was so committed and really threw himself into it.

“He said I should never be reticent and go in with both feet. He also told me to use the energy in the room and play to the crowd. He was obviously a big crowd pleaser so he was encouraging me to do that. It was very good advice.” When Ed competed on the show he wowed viewers with a series of wacky routines, including one to Gangnam Style – a TV moment which was nominated for a Bafta.

Joe and Katya danced a salsa last night in Blackpool, inset, in a bid to survive another vote-off.

Jonnie Peacock is favourite to go but Joe reckons he’s at risk. He said: “I never thought I’d get this far, which is a really lovely position to be in.

“Anything from here is a bonus. Someone told me that there’s no shame in going home at this point and I think that’s really true.

“I’m taking it one week at a time.”
