Debbie’s stuck on winning

- ■ EXCLUSIVE by ED GLEAVE

HANDS ON: Their tango DEBBIE McGee is so determined to win Strictly she glued her fingers together to help her routine. The TV favourite, 59, was convinced the move would help her master the tango. She told the Daily Star Sunday: “The tango was hard as the judges are looking for technique. “I wasn’t sure if I could do it without making a mistake.

“For that performance four fingers on my left hand had to be glued together because they kept naturally separating.

“I was walking around all week gluing them together.”

Strictly is so nerveracking for Debbie she is suffering sleepless nights, which makes training sessions even tougher.

She added: “I didn’t sleep for two nights before we did that tango. I am not sleeping that well if I’m honest. Some nights I get five or six hours.

“I reckon I can cope on six hours. But then the next night your adrenaline fires you up and your brain won’t go to sleep.”

Debbie admitted taking naps between filming and said: “That keeps me going.” Debbie and her pro partner Giovanni Pernice performed the Argentine tango on last night’s show.

She said: “The schedule is really intense. Giovanni will teach me the steps on a Monday and then on Tuesday we start learning the technique.

“You do so much other filming for the show that on average you probably get four afternoons to learn each dance – that’s it.” Debbie and Giovanni were in the bottom two last week in a shock result.

They had been the favourites to win for weeks but now Debbie reckons she’s at risk. She said: “I’m just going to enjoy this as much as I possibly can. Anything can happen.

“The thing about Strictly is that the dark horse comes through and there are lots of people improving. “You are never safe in Strictly.”
