Hardman Ayala has another off day

-

Davies; Yiadom, MacDonald, Lindsay, Fryers; Williams; Hammill (Hedges 76th), Potts, Moncur (Gardner 46th), Barnes (Ugbo 46th); Bradshaw as loanee Harvey Barnes squared up to full-back

Luke Ayling after accusing the Leeds man of diving and most of the players got involved in the ensuing scuffle.

And midway through the half, Leeds were celebrating a deserved opener.

Saiz was given acres of space in the Barnsley half and advanced unchallenged before unleashing an effort that went through the hands of goalkeeper Adam Davies.

It was the Spaniard’s ninth goal of the campaign.

Barnsley were carrying little goal threat and their task looked impossible as Leeds doubled their lead in first-half stoppage time.

Some great pressing from Ayling won possession back and Alioski bent a fine curling effort into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

Leeds might have expected some sort of backlash from their hosts after the break but it was business as usual and Pablo Hernandez was inches from making it three when his free-kick was deflected just wide.

Still the visitors looked more dangerous and Caleb Ekuban hit the side-netting after a lovely ball through by Hernandez.

Barnsley tried to up their levels and finally had a shot on target with 13 minutes to go, though Gary Gardner’s effort will barely count as it trickled to Felix Wiedwald.

Leeds continued to look more likely with Alioski and Hernandez both firing over.

After the game, Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom made it clear he was far from impressed with the way Leeds celebrated their second goal.

He said: “Someone needs to have a bit more class about themselves when they score a goal.

“One of their lads needs to learn how to celebrate and have a bit of class about them rather than have a go at our bench.” Boro forward David Nugent before lashing a fierce finish past Randolph from 12 yards.

Derby went close again when Tom Lawrence cut in from the left to drill a low shot straight at Randolph but Boro finished the first half strongly and created two decent opportunities.

Assombalonga headed Stewart Downing’s corner wide of the left-hand post before full-back Fabio Da Silva also failed to find the target as he nodded Christie’s cross over the bar from inside the six-yard box.

They proved to be crucial misses as Derby doubled their lead from the penalty spot after three minutes of the second half.

Braithwaite conceded possession in his own LEEDS: Wiedwald; Ayling, Jansson, Cooper, Berardi; O’Kane (Shaughnessy 58th), Phillips; Alioski (Grot 88th), Saiz, Hernandez; Ekuban (Roofe 80th) half, enabling Nugent to play Vydra into the area. He went tumbling under a challenge from Ayala and picked himself up to roll the spot-kick into the corner of the net.

The former Liverpool man could have been sent off for the foul, given he had already been booked in the first half, but it did not take him long to book himself an early bath.

He clattered into the back of Nugent as the striker held up the ball close to the halfway line and ref Simon Hooper rightly issued a red card.

With a man advantage, it only took Derby three minutes to extend their lead with Vydra claiming his hat-trick.

Ben Gibson’s back-pass put Randolph under Samuel Saiz A Madley pressure and with the Boro goalkeeper only able to spoon the ball up in the air, Vydra gratefully took possession before slotting home.

Boro boss Garry Monk said: “Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. It was disappointing to go from playing that well in the first half, where we played some of our best football this season.

“But the second half was horrible. We shot ourselves in the foot with individual mistakes.”
