Mac’s strike shows Coleman is mustard

- By STEVE SLOANE

CHRIS COLEMAN described Sunderland’s defending as “stunning” as they held out for a win from their only effort on goal.

Aiden McGeady headed home an Adam Matthews cross in the 40th minute to convert Sunderland’s sole effort.

But it was the defensive resolve shown by the Black Cats after they had taken the lead that particularly impressed the former Wales boss.

“Three points is all that matters. We had to do something different to what we did in the last game – and I thought the guys were brilliant,” said Coleman, who had seen Sunderland beaten 3-0 by Sheffield United in their previous outing.

“I was critical of us after the last game but this time I was proud of our players. They were brilliant.

“We defended in the second half for long periods but we defended really well. The only scare was when they hit the post with their last kick.

“We deserved the three points. It was the overall performance that pleased me because there was a lot of intent.

“It was the organisation and communication. Some of the defending was stunning. I thought all the lads were absolutely fantastic.”

Forest manager Mark Warburton admitted it was another frustrating afternoon forhis side, who lost 3-0 at home to Sheffield Wednesday on Boxing Day in a run of just one win in seven Championship games.

“It was similar to the last game in that we created chances but did not put them away,” he said.

“But the second-half performance was unacceptable.

“We wanted to see bravery, innovation and desire to get three points.

“We did not have that. They were solid and compact and you cannot lose patience.”
