Nuno fails to add to top-flight victim list

- By ADRIAN STILES

WOLVES were unable to claim another Premier League scalp as their FA Cup tie against Swansea at Molineux finished goalless and 10-a-side.

Wanderers have an impressive record against top-flight opposition in the past 12 months, having won at Stoke and Liverpool in the FA Cup last season.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s runaway Championship leaders have also beaten Southampton this campaign in the Carabao Cup and took Manchester City all the way to penalties in the same competition.

Hopes were high that they could add Swansea to that list of victims and Wolves did have the better chances to score, until their momentum was interrupted by Ruben Vinagre’s red card five minutes before half-time.

Swansea came into the game a bit more but they were also reduced in number in the 67th minute when Leroy Fer was sent off.

Neither team could make a breakthrough and they will replay at the Liberty Stadium later this month.

The Wolves boss had no problem with the sending offs and said: “I agree with both. They were red cards.

“I think the team played really well. When you go down to 10 men you have to find solutions and even with 10, I think we controlled the game really well.

“Swansea did not create enough and even with 10 players we were better than them.”

Carlos Carvalhal believes the Swans – bottom of the Premier League – showed further signs of progress under his management.

“I am very pleased with my players because the commitment and attitude was good and we played with good quality against a very strong team,” he said.

“Two days after I arrived we played against Watford and we won. Three days after we played against Tottenham and in normal circumstances we never lose that game.

“Now after four days we prepare a team to play against the strongest team in the Championship and we achieve a clean sheet and take the game to a replay.”
