SANCHEZ OFF AND RUNNING AS POGBA GETS WATCHING BRIEF

- By PAUL HETHERINGTON

ALEXIS SANCHEZ and Paul Pogba had contrasting days at Old Trafford as Manchester United returned to winning ways.

Pogba, the club’s £89million record signing, was dropped for the first time, although he came on as a 65th-minute substitute.

But Sanchez scored on his home debut as United bounced back from their 2-0 midweek defeat at Tottenham.

United boss Jose Mourinho insisted he had NOT punished Pogba for his performance against Spurs.

Mourinho said: “I change players but it is not to punish anyone otherwise I’d need someone to punish me, because we win together and we lose together.

“I played Scott McTominay because he has a great desire to recover the ball. He is very intelligent and learns every day. I like the idea of a kid at nine years of age coming to the academy with his mum and now he is playing in the first team.

“But Paul came on with a great attitude and showed his quality. He is one of the most talented midfield players in the world.

“It is not the end of the world to be a substitute for a day.”

On Sanchez, Mourinho said: “Alexis enjoyed the game and the balance of the team.

“He is a fantastic player. It was not a dream goal but he showed a good reaction.”
