fragmented and he can only recall it as someone who witnessed the killing rather than an active participant.

“But it’s all an act. He is very manipulative, even amongst other prisoners who have no idea who he is.

“He trades on his notoriety to get whatever he needs. If he doesn’t like his cell or landing he says that he thinks his identity has been compromised and he is moved immediately.”

Venables, who is currently on suicide watch, was jailed last week after admitting having more than

1,000 indecent images of children. He was recalled to prison in November after being caught with the pictures.

He pleaded guilty to four counts – including owning 392 category A images, 148 category B and 630 category C pictures.

Venables, who appeared via video link, also pleaded guilty to having a paedophile manual on or before November 17 last year.

He has been caged for 40 months. Along with Robert Thompson, Venables abducted, tortured and killed two-year-old James in Liverpool when they were both aged 10.

They were released on licence in

2001 after serving eight years for the murder and were both given new identities.

James was with his mother Denise in the Strand shopping centre in Bootle, Liverpool, as she shopped in a butcher’s on February 12, 1993.

When she turned round, her twoyear-old son was missing.

His mutilated body was found on a railway line three days later. ‘AMAZING’: Mum Denise A PETITION demanding answers about how James Bulger’s killer was free to commit new offences could be debated in Parliament.

The campaign, supported by the murdered toddler’s mother Denise Fergus, calls for a public inquiry into his time in the prison system.

Earlier this week, Venables was convicted of possessing indecent images of children for a second time and jailed again. The petition claims “there have been a number of issues that have been swept under the carpet”, including why the killer was deemed rehabilitated.

Just days from the 25th anniversary of the crime which horrified the nation on February 12, 1993, more than 145,000 people had put their names to the petition.

It says: “We want a Public Inquiry into the James Bulger murder case.” Because it has more than 100,000 supporters it will be considered for a debate in the Houses of Parliament. James’ mother Denise hailed the milestone, having earlier expressed anger at how the criminal justice system had “failed” her and her son.

She tweeted: “Wow we’ve done it, thanks to everyone who has signed and shared my petition, your support has once again been amazing, I’m so lucky to have you all on board, you have been with me throughout my very long journey and have never given up.”
