My Reds can be kings of Europe

- ■ by STEVE MILLAR

LIVERPOOL legend Robbie Fowler has backed his club to dish out some pain in the Champions League this season.

The Reds visit Porto on Wednesday and not even die-hard fans would splash much of their cash betting on Liverpool lifting the famous trophy for a sensational sixth time.

But Fowler points out that his former club were not favourites in 2005 on that amazing Istanbul night when they beat AC Milan.

And in Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mo Salah (left) they have got a hat-trick of magical stars capable of inspiring victory against any side.

Fowler, in particular, is impressed by £34million Egypt striker Salah who will be aiming to set his sights at Southampton today.

He said: “The massive Liverpool squad we have is maybe not as strong as other Premier League teams. But you know what? The first 11 can do a job. They really can.

“It’s not a cliche and saying all the right things for Liverpool because I’m still associated with the club. We have all witnessed just how good Liverpool are when they play against good teams.

“Mane, Salah, Firmino are all great players who can mix it with the very best of European football.”

And Fowler (below) reckons teams will not fancy coming to Anfield.

He added: “Liverpool are not the favourites but teams will be wary.

“I’m not saying I would fancy them to win it but they’ve got a good chance. Night games are always special at Anfield.

“The atmosphere is what drives the players on.

“That can be very intimidating.

“The opposition know what the crowd is like and if those supporters get behind the team the way they do, then it makes it intimidating.”

The worry for the Liverpool fans is that Salah will attract interest from Europe’s elite.

But Fowler said: “You know what? I’m not interested in that. All I’m interested in is him scoring goals.”

●Robbie Fowler was talking after Liverpool’s Legends took part in a training day at the club’s academy to prepare for their charity match against Bayern Munich Legends at Anfield on Saturday, March 24.
