The US president has not been to Britain since he was elected to the White House in November 2016.

An intended trip to London to open the US Embassy in January never took place.

Now a visit by Mr Trump has been “pencilled in”, according to reports.

An unnamed US official has been quoted as saying the president was looking at coming in “late summer”.

Mr Trump cancelled a visit to open the new US embassy, criticising its move from Grosvenor Square in the prestigious Mayfair district of central London to an “off location”, south of the Thames.

The president blamed the cost of the new embassy and its location south of the River Thames, saying it was a “bad deal”.

But his cancellation prompted speculation Mr Trump had been offended by remarks from prominent UK figures.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson accused London Mayor Sadiq Khan of endangering the so-called “special relationship” after Mr Khan said the president had “got the message” from Londoners and would have been met by “mass peaceful protests” if he visited.

The president has had a turbulent relationship with Theresa May, with the Prime Minister going from holding his hand to publicly criticising him.
