THAT’S POTTY

How can bacon butty be healthier than a bowl of muesli?

SOME breakfasts at Greggs, McDonalds and Burger King have less sugar and calories than “healthy” yoghurts.

Slimmers grabbing breakfast on the go might think they are doing well to avoid pastries and bacon sandwiches in favour of a fruit pot.

But we discovered a seemingly saintly breakfast bowl could have more sugar and calories than a bacon butty from a fast food chain.

A Daily Star Sunday investigation can reveal that at Boots a berry, yoghurt and granola pot contained

357 calories – which is more than a McDonalds bacon butty.

It also contained 31 grams of sugar, far more than a can of Coke or a Costa chocolate pastry twist which has 22 grams.

Elsewhere, a pot of seemingly nutritious

Pret A Manger Bircher Muesli had nearly

35 grams of sugar in it – that is the same amount as in a Mars bar.

The Berry Good Bircher Muesli in Starbucks had 253 calories.

In comparison, a bacon butty from Burger King had just 210 calories.

Even a trendy dairyfree Chai Almond Oat pot from EAT had a gut-busting 347 calories and 10 grams of sugar.

Meanwhile, a tasty sausage butty from Subway came in with slightly more calories, 400 but less sugar (just six grams).

Caffe Nero’s Apple and Berry Bircher Muesli had fewer calories – 203 calories – but more sugar (14.4 grams). Greggs Red Berry porridge had the least fat of all the breakfast pots we sampled (3.3 grams, with 250 calories and 11 grams of sugar). Blueberry muffins from Starbucks had 472 calories and 26.3 grams of sugar, making them almost as calorific as a McDonalds Big Mac with 507 calories and nine grams of sugar.

Nutritionist Justin Lord runs The Life Lab Online and has worked with celebs like WAG Leanne Brown and actress Amanda Redman.

He said it was “worrying” that people were being sold seemingly healthy breakfasts that are packed with sugar.

Justin said: “It’s wrong. People will be eating them and wondering why they’re not losing weight.

“And there is every chance that they can gain weight if eaten daily.

“It’s terrible that when it comes to calories, eating a bacon butty from Burger King is the best option.

“Things like bircher muesli only taste good if sugar or sweetener is added.

“Without it, it would be like eating cardboard and people just wouldn’t buy it.” AN EAT Chai Almond Pot has 347 calories and 10 grams of sugar, while a Subway sausage butty has 400 calories – but just six grams of sugar CANOF COCA-COLA
