Stags and Hens storm Benidorm

RESORT’S BACK AFTER KILLJOY CLAMPDOWN

BENIDORM is back among the top venues for stag and hen parties two years after locals tried to ban them.

The Spanish resort came in at number ten in a poll of the most popular destinations for fun-seekers.

Stuffy local councillors have spent years trying to tone down the resort’s raucous reputation.

Some hotels banned large groups and new rules were brought in outlawing lewd behaviour in public.

The tough approach meant revellers began heading for Barcelona and Marbella instead.

But new statistics have revealed the Costa Blanca resort is back in favour with the stag and hen crowd.

Last week we revealed how the once rowdy Magaluf was looking like a “ghost town”.

A downturn came after partypooping councillors threatened to fine bar owners for revellers’ drunken antics.

It is the first time since 2013 that Benidorm has been included on the list of top venues.

The findings, by UK-based stag company Last Night Of Freedom, were calculated through sales of their weekend packages.

Matt Mavir, managing director, said: “Over the years we have seen Marbella and Barcelona become popular with stag and hen parties.

“However, more are deciding to head to the Costa Blanca for a weekend in the sun.

“The sunny beaches of Spain are a real draw for stags.

“Benidorm offers everything – good weather, great activities and an even better nightlife.”

And its popularity is set to continue for the coming year.

According to Last Night Of Freedom, Benidorm has been Europe’s most enquired about destination in 2018, beating Madrid, Barcelona and Marbella.

In 2014 we revealed officials were clamping down with new laws banning bad behaviour.

Town hall chiefs said they were drafting in legislation after pictures emerged of drunken British blokes on a stag do.

Officials were worried the bawdy images would tarnish the town’s reputation after years spent trying to improve it.

Each year 500,000 Brits visit Benidorm, the subject of the popular ITV sitcom starring Johnny Vegas. European Court is the latest in a long line of cases that confirms airlines are often obliged to provide monetary compensation of up to £530 to passengers who find travel plans severely disrupted at the last minute.”

The ruling comes just weeks after research revealed passengers were still being denied £4m in compensation from airlines despite the courts ordering firms to hand over the cash.
