Champs must wait to join the 100 club

- By ADRIAN STILES

WOLVES’ bid to smash the 100-point barrier was blocked at a bouncing Molineux.

The champions were desperate for a victory to mark receiving the Championship trophy in front of their own fans.

They dominated but could not find a way past an inspired Cameron Dawson in the Owls’ goal.

Making only the fourth Championship appearance of his career, Dawson stood up to everything that was thrown at him as the visitors held on for a creditable point following back-to-back wins over Hull and Reading. Wolves now need at least a draw in their final game of the campaign at relegated Sunderland to reach 100 points.

Boss Nuno Espirito Santo said: “It is a special day, a fantastic day. When you get something that is material and you can hold on to that is when you feel you are champions.

“I think we were the better team in the competition, more consistent and we deserved it after the hard work of the boys. It is a day that I will always remember.

“I think we deserved to win against Sheffield Wednesday. We had chances to win and we have one more game to finish well.

“This season deserves to end with a win. We must feel the taste of winning because it is what we have been doing all season.”

The hosts were given a guard of honour by the Wednesday players but the respect stopped there for Dawson.

After Benik Afobe dragged a one-on-one chance wide, the stopper somehow denied Diogo Jota from close range.

He returned to haunt the striker in the second half, blocking one effort and tipping away his cross-shot in the 52nd minute.

Dawson then dived bravely at the feet of substitute Leo Bonatini five minutes from time as Wednesday held on for a point.

Visiting boss Jos Luhukay also paid tribute to Wolves and said: “When you stay in position number one and have so many wins it is all credit to Wolves.”
