SOUNESS BACKING GERRARD

- ■ by SCOTT BURNS

GRAEME SOUNESS has claimed Steven Gerrard would become a GOD if he took the Rangers job and stopped Celtic’s dominance.

The Ibrox club have shortlisted the Liverpool and England legend to replace Graeme Murty this summer.

Gerrard is weighing up the prospect of taking over and if he does he would be hoping to have the same success as Souness had when he stepped into the Rangers hotseat in 1986.

Souness said: “He has spent the vast majority of his life at a very passionate football club which is one of the few in England that is an institution.

“If he goes to Glasgow he will be going to a football club that is an institution. I would say the same about Celtic.

“Why is it an institution? Because of what it means to the supporters.

“If Steven decides to go there it is not the best time to manage Rangers because of their difficulties – but what a job!

“If he goes up there and gets it half right he will be a god.

“If he does go he is going to a football club who for the best part of a decade have been in the doldrums.”

Souness, with massive financial backing, turned Rangers into a major force and set them on the way to nine league titles in a row.

Gerrard (above) will not have the same spending power to land top English stars if he takes over.

He would find himself tasked with ending the dominance of former boss Brendan Rodgers – whose side can make it seven titles in a row if they beat Rangers at Celtic Park today.

Murty is currently in charge at Rangers but that arrangement will not be extended beyond the summer.
