DUE TO PRESS START TIMES AT OUR NEW PRESSES WE CAN ONLY CARRY THE NATIONAL LOTTERY RESULTS IN OUR LATER EDITIONS DONALD Trump has been branded “ridiculous” for claiming a London hospital was like a “war zone” because of knife crime.
The US president was defending gun ownership in the wake of a spate of mass casualty shootings in the States.
He told a meeting of the National Rifle Association: “I recently read a story that in London, which has unbelievably tough gun laws, a once very prestigious hospital right in the middle is like a war zone for horrible stabbing wounds.
“They don’t have guns, they have knives. And instead there’s blood all over the floors of this hospital.”
It is thought Mr Trump may have been referring to the Royal London Hospital after a surgeon there claimed colleagues likened working in the city to Camp Bastion in Afghanistan.
But Lib Dem home affairs spokesman Sir Ed Davey said the president’s words were “ridiculous”.
He added: “To defend America’s shocking gun laws by revealing his ignorance of Britain should alarm even his apologists in the Conservative Party.”
Mr Trump is due to visit the UK in July.
