3rd/4th Place Playoff

SCOTLAND ........ 0 TURKEY ........... 0 DISGRACED Joel Tomkins and under-pressure Wigan will both come back firing.

That is the promise from prop Tony Clubb after a week of turmoil on and off the field.

Dual-code England international Tomkins (below) has moved to Hull KR after a video of a vile rant at two barmaids went viral.

The team has also been rocked by three defeats since coach Shaun Wane dropped the bombshell that he is leaving at the end of the season.

But former England star Clubb insists the club is strong enough to stare down the criticism and hit back stronger.

He said: “We are up against it on and off the field at the minute and people are bouncing off it.

“We will take a good tough look at ourselves and we will get it right over the next few weeks.

“We’ve got a long turnaround now before our game at Hull on Saturday and we have got a bit of time away with our families.

“We will all recharge and come back in on Tuesday and we will be ready to rip in. We are a tough team and Waney drives us pretty hard.”

Tomkins, 31, was hit with a four-week ban and a £10,000 fine and later issued a public apology for his drunken antics in a Wigan pub. But the club, who also fined Tomkins’ brother Sam £5,000 for his involvement, then sprang a surprise by agreeing to let the ex-Saracens ace leave.

It left his team-mates reeling but Clubb insists they – and Tomkins – will bounce back. He said: “We know Joel messed up and he has admitted that and accepted his punishment. “Everyone makes mistakes and no one is perfect.”

Clubb, 30, was also surprised this week to find himself copping two unexpected digs from fellow pros Dave Fifita and Jon Wilkin. Wakefield prop Fifita accused him and his team-mate Ben Flower of “grubbiness” ahead CLUBB A GRUB: Prop Tony laughed off claims of being ‘grubby’ of the

Trinity on

Thursday.

Clubb said: “I’ve only played against him once so I don’t know how that came about.

“It was probably tongue in cheek but it made it interesting for our middles! But we had a laugh afterwards and I found it quite funny, to be honest.

“It makes it more interesting. All middles are grubs, they all try to get one over on each other and it’s all fun and games.”

Clubb, 30, also got tagged the most strapped man in Super League by St Helens forward Wilkin.

“He’s insane,” said Wilkin. “He’s got both elbows and a knee strapped and was trying to biff everyone against Warrington.”

Clubb said: “I am old now so I need it to hold me together! Over the last couple of years I have gone through the wringer, with neck surgery and having a kidney taken out, so a bit of strapping is the least of my worries.”
