XXXXXXXXXXXXXXSWITZERLAND football chief Alex Miescher wants players with dual nationalities to pick a country from an early age – and stick with their choice.
The Swiss federation’s general secretary is worried that players could benefit from his country’s youth development programmes then go on to play for other national teams at senior level.
The national side – KO’d at the World Cup after a 1-0 defeat to Sweden – draws heavily on second generation immigrants, including Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri.
The pair are ethnic Albanians and celebrated goals in the win over Serbia with an Eagle gesture imitating Albania’s flag.
“One might have to ask
– do we want dual citizens?” said Miescher
“There should be a plan where players with several nationalities could be tied to the Swiss team at an early stage. It’s an idea that has grown on me. The events with the double eagles show that there’s a problem.”
Players who have represented Switzerland at youth level but then switched allegiance include Xhaka’s brother Taulant, who plays for Albania, and Ivan Rakitic, a Croatia international.
