6-2. JAMIE MURRAY took a step towards a title that has eluded him at Wimbledon as he and partner Bruno Soares reached the last 16 of the men’s doubles.

The fifth seeds were too strong for unseeded pair Matthew Ebden of Australia and American Taylor Fritz, winning 7-5 6-3 6-1.

Murray, a five-time Grand Slam doubles champion, was a beaten finalist with previous pal John Peers three years ago.

But the Brit hopes to go one further in London SW19 this summer.

Murray, brother of two-time Wimbledon singles champion Andy, has taken the mixed crown at the All England Club on two occasions.

But he was going to opt out of defending his 2017 triumCpAhP–TsIOeNal:e8dpwt ith the now retired Martina Hingis – to boocsatphtiosnchwaonrdcessinin the men’s event, before opting to enter hweitrhe npelewaspeartner Victoria Azarenka this year.

Now he believes he can achieve a double double. And he made a good start with the help of Soares.

HARRY PRATT SMOOTH: Del Potro NET LOSS: Edmund is consoled by winner Djokovic JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO is making a serious racket at Wimbledon again – after breezing into the last 16 for the first time in five years.

The Argentine giant had not reached the second week here since 2013 following a serious wrist injury that required several bouts of career-saving surgery.

But having slowly but surely recovered from that problem over the last couple of seasons, Del Potro is now back at No.4 in the world.

And on the evidence of the 6ft 6ins powerhouse’s smooth, swift passage in each of his three matches to date he looks a genuine contender.

The 2009 US Open champion was in top form yesterday on Court Two, where he thumped flamboyant Frenchman Benoit Paire.

The 6-4 7-6 6-4 victory in two hours and 24 minutes means he is still to drop a set en route to a fourth-round showdown tomorrow against France’s Gilles Simon who beat Aussie Matthew Ebden in four sets.

All of which means the fifth seed could be the one to threaten Rafa Nadal’s bid for glory at the quarter-final stage.

While Del Potro, 29, was delighted, Paire was unhappy with officials.

The world No.47, who twice fell heavily during the encounter, moaned about a number of overrules. He said: “I’d give the umpire one out of 10 – for calling the score.”
