FRYING AGAIN

36C blast on the way while holidaymakers face travel hell

THE sizzling summer will return next weekend bringing its hottest temperatures yet.

Despite cooler conditions today and storms, experts say the UK will “fry again”.

The mercury is set to hit 30C and could reach 36C, making it hotter than parts of Africa.

Storms yesterday and on Friday brought 60mph gales and torrential rain to parts of Britain which sparked mayhem.

In York, giant hailstones blew holes in canvas roofs.

But crowds (inset) soaked up the sun at Ascot, Berks, for the King George Day races yesterday.

And the Met Office said the south of England and the Midlands will be mainly dry from tomorrow, with highs pushing 30C by next weekend and “well over 30C” for the following days. The Weather Outlook said 36C is expected amid continental heat.

Ladbrokes cut odds to evens on August highs beating Britain’s

38.5C (101.3F) record, set on August 10,

2003, at Brogdale,

Kent. A spokesman said: “We’ll fry again.”

Gusts are predicted to reach 50mph or a bit higher today in the south west of England with 40mph or a bit higher in the east. Most of Britain will see rain.

Met Office forecaster Steven Keates said: “This weekend is a shock to the system after hot conditions.

“Heavy rain and strong winds will impact people on holiday, camping, at festivals and travelling. “But the hot air will come back later in the week to the south and midlands, with very high values well over 30C shown on forecast models from a week’s time.” The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “It feels like we’ve been fast-forwarded from midsummer to autumn overnight.

“But summer’s not done with us yet. The reservoir of heat over Europe is set to return later in the week.”
