“If somebody said to me you could have a baby now I’d be like, ‘No, I’m good, thank you’!”

While dancing on Stricly, Gemma presented her breakfast radio show every weekday. She finished at 10am before spending eight hours training.

But manic schedules and hard graft are nothing new for Gemma, who was born in Bury, Lancs.

She played Lisa Hunter in Hollyoaks for five years before becoming a favourite on ITV soap Emmerdale as Carly Hope.

But her demanding schedule took its toll and she was forced to quit the Yorkshire-based soap. Gemma said: “I was doing my Key 103 radio show and Emmerdale together for six months and I just took on too much.

“Leaving Emmerdale was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make. “I was getting up at 4am, wasn’t getting home until 8.30pm and then had to learn my lines.” With acting on hold for the moment, Gemma has swapped her local radio show in Manchester for national station Hits Radio alongside Gethin Jones.

She is also working on a new book, The Ultimate Body Plan, which is due to be published in December. It has a 12-week fitness plan and 80 recipes.

She has also just launched her own clothing fitness range, GA by Gemma Atkinson. She added: “I was always getting sent fitness stuff and either it didn’t fit or it wasn’t the sort of thing I’d wear.

“I said to my agent that it was silly that we were sending all this stuff back and we should just do our own.”

She continued: “I started looking into it about two years ago and I want women to feel comfortable and confident in the gym. “It’s all made to order and it’s a thrill to see it all come to fruition.”

Keeping healthy has always been key for Gemma, who lost her father David to heart disease at the age of just 52.

He was a non-smoker and moderate drinker and in the years since he died Gemma has tirelessly given her support to the British Heart Foundation charity.
