Mow backs boss after Tayo late show

TONY MOWBRAY claimed his old club Ipswich are in “good hands” after England youth star Edun Tayo salvaged an added-time point for new boss Paul Hurst.

The post-Mick McCarthy era at Portman Road had got off to a perfect start when debutant Gwion Edwards scored after only five minutes.

Former Ipswich captain Mowbray then seemed set to spoil the party when goals from Danny Graham and Bradley Dack saw his Rovers side take the lead.

But Tayo, who joined on a season-long loan from Fulham on Friday, netted a lucky added-time equaliser when his attempted cross was missed by the Rovers rearguard and keeper David Raya and went in off the far post.

Rovers boss Mowbray, who brought his side up from League One last season, said: “The

dressing room is very disappointed and frustrated. They are discussing what they might have done to stop that goal at the end.

“But this is the Championship. No team gives in – everybody keeps going. I thought was an okay game.

“I think the club has made a good decision with this coach and both clubs will do well this season. If you are an Ipswich-minded person, I think the club is in good hands. The evidence is there.

“Look at Edwards on the wing. He is Billy Whizz at times. Obviously I have an Ipswich mind, having been here for nine years, and I want them to do well after today.”

Welsh winger Edwards headed home Freddie Sears’ cross then Graham swept a loose ball home to equalise after 20 minutes. The former Swansea and Sunderland striker turned provider nine minutes later when he released Derrick Williams down the left and his low cross was converted by Dack.

Hurst, who left out £8million-rated striker Martyn Waghorn before his imminent transfer, said: “It was far from a great performance but there was a lot of character shown.

“The goal was fortunate but it was a great delivery in the right area and it created difficulty for their goalkeeper. I thought a draw was a fair result.”
