CRACKER JACOBS HAS COOK PURRING

CHAMPIONSHIP new boys Wigan paraded five new signings but it was old hand Michael Jacobs who was the star turn.

Jacobs, now in his fourth season at the DW Stadium, scored twice and was only denied a third by the woodwork, and then carved out the chance for Nick Powell to score Wigan’s third.

Latics boss Paul Cook said: “I am really delighted for Michael. He shows belief and that is so important in football.

“He always believes he can win and all the

team executed that belief in support. Wednesday are such a big club and they had massive support here but we handled the situation so well and deserved the result.

“Our debutants were excellent. It was such short notice for them to be on the pitch but we were aggressive and decisive.”

Wigan’s superiority shell-shocked Wednesday, who have not been able to sign one single player, with owner Dejphon Chansiri promising to clear the air at a fans’ meeting tomorrow.

The Owls gave some hope with goals from Atdhe Nuhiu and the mercurial Fernando Forestieri but the angry chants from their huge travelling army of fans means boss Jos Luhukay is under pressure from the off.

With Nuhiu also red-carded for a second foul late on, it was even worse for the Owls. Luhukay said: “We had no control in our defending. We gave them more chances. Wigan could have easily had four or five goals.

“We never made enough chances of our own. This is not the team I saw at the end of last season.”
