Early Stone Age tools seem to reflect equal numbers of people who were left and right-handed. Cave drawings have even indicated a preference for the left hand.
But when tools became more sophisticated a clear preference for the right hand emerged.
There are several theories as to why right-handedness developed over left.
One is sun worship: In the Northern Hemisphere the sun moves from left to right, with the Another theory is that primitive hunters and warriors would protect their hearts with a shield. As the heart is on the left-hand side, they would hold the shield with their left hand and fight with their right. The Latin word “sinistra” originally meant “left” but took on the meaning of “evil” or “unlucky” in the Classical Latin era. In English, “sinister” means giving the impression that something harmful or evil will happen.
