New boy Weimann on money once more

- By LINDSAY SUTTON

BIG-SPENDING Bristol City saved their blushes as Andreas Weimann led a late comeback after his side were hit by two goals in three minutes.

The Robins’ new signing, a £2million buy from Derby, started the fightback shortly after Will Buckley and Josh Magennis had put Phil Parkinson’s Bolton 2-0 up.

And Jamie Paterson netted a decisive late leveller when he kept his head to hit a perfect right-foot shot into the corner, giving keeper Ben Alnwick no chance.

Certainly the recovery pleased City’s assistant boss Dean Holden, who said: “In the end we could have won it. Overall, I don’t think it was a fair result but you don’t always get what you deserve.

“After that three-minute spell with their goals, we showed character, stuck to our gameplan and got back into it.

“Weimann’s goal and performance was all the more impressive in that he was injured in the first half but soldiered on right to the end.

“Paterson is one of the best strikers around and his goal was something special to watch.”

Bolton boss Parkinson said: “I’m not happy with their two goals. The first was clearly offside and for the second, David Wheater was pole-axed in the middle of the pitch but no free-kick was given.”

In truth, City dominated the attacking play throughout the first half and had a penalty turned down shortly after the break when Niclas Eliasson went down, only to be booked for diving.

Minutes later came Bolton’s shell-shock strikes.

A Buckley effort seemed to be headed off the goalline by Marlon Pack but rookie ref John Brooks consulted his goalline technology buzzer, which indicated that the ball had crossed the line.

It was clear which team had shelled out millions of pounds on players during pre-season but it was Bolton’s £200,000 signing who bagged the second goal.

Magennis beat Niki Maenpaa to make it 2-0 and the Trotters seemed certain to be heading to a second win in two games, only for City to spoil their perfect start.
