Boss Macca as Blades strike McGold

-

Nyland; Tuanzebe (Adomah 64th), Chester, Jedinak, Hutton; Bjarnason; Elmohamady, Grealish, McGinn, Green (HepburnMurphy 74th); Kodjia (Hourihane 87th) the desire. As for David, to score that penalty 60 seconds after coming on that takes courage.”

Opposite number Steve McClaren was less impressed with events – indeed he was fuming over the way that the officials allowed both United goals to stand.

The former England boss said: “Two decisions have cost us. For their first goal Sharp is offside – it’s hard to understand how they’ve missed it.

“And I have looked at the replay of the penalty and nobody touches McGoldrick.

“The result is hard to take but the performance is not. We asked the boys to be brave and they were.”

United were rock-bottom before kick-off after suffering a 2-1 reverse at Swansea last weekend before a 3-0 beating at WIGAN: Walton; James, Dunkley, Kipre, Robinson; McManaman (Evans

53rd), Connolly, Morsy, Jacobs; Grigg (Vaughan 80th), Powell (Windass

68th) Middlesbrough in midweek. And the Blades seemed to be heading for a third straight loss when man of the match Eze secured a deserved breakthrough in the first half.

Pace, power, and a vicious shot are the forward’s key elements – as he showed by finishing off a sweeping move with a blistering finish.

Luke Freeman played a huge part, beating two defenders to reach the edge of the United penalty area before shifting the ball to Jake Bidwell.

The left-back’s low cross was cleared – but only as far as Eze and the teenage forward blasted past keeper Dean Henderson from 18 yards out.

And he nearly doubled the lead 10 minutes twice later, driving inches wide. Just before half-time, though, United were level with Mark Jack Grealish J Simpson Duffy and Kieron Freeman combining to provide skipper Sharp with a tap-in.

Then came the two moments that changed turned the match in the Blades favour.

Firstly, Wilder replaced Sharp with McGoldrick. His superb 19-minute display, before being subbed himself for Ryan Leonard, was the deciding factor as he won a penalty after going down under Bidwell’s ‘shove’.

And the striker stepped up to send Matt Ingram the wrong way – and the travelling fans into ecstasy. (KO 3pm unless stated)
