Dina has inspired Brits to give Muir
ON THE RUN: Muir LAURA MUIR has vowed to finish what Dina Asher-Smith started and become Britain’s second golden girl.
Asher-Smith (below) kept herself on course for a treble as she clinched
200m gold last night. A British record and world-leading time of
21.89secs was enough to add to her 100m crown as she became the first Brit to complete the Euro sprint double.
And she can make it three from three in the
4x100m relay tonight. Muir is hoping to emulate her success and goes into today’s 1500m as hot favourite to take a crown that has eluded even Dame Kelly Holmes.
“Dina opened it and hopefully I can close it,” said the Scot, referring to Asher-Smith’s 100m triumph on the first night of these Euros.
“I would be very disappointed if I don’t get the gold.
“That’s the level I’m at. It’s something I should achieve.”
Muir, 25, took the 1500m indoor title at last year’s Euros in Belgrade – and added the 3000m just for good measure.
She initially planned to double up again here before deciding to put all her eggs in one basket and make sure of nailing the 1500m.
Seeing Asher-Smith destroy her rivals in the sprints has only made Muir more eager to deliver before the curtain falls tonight.
“I watched Dina win the 100m at our training camp in St Moritz and I couldn’t believe her time,” Muir said.
“I just want to keep that momentum going.”
Last night, Asher-Smith made history as the first Briton to complete the Euro sprint double.
Four days after winning the 100 metres, smashing her own national record and setting a world lead in the process, she sensationally repeated the trick over the longer distance.
Asher-Smith, 22, retained the title he she won in Amsterdam two years ago in an astonishing time of
21.89secs. PLANS: Tyson Fury
