it. And it has certainly been a good start with two wins out of two.”

This was a game of contrasting summers as while Tottenham spent nothing, Fulham surpassed the

£103.3million mark by buying or taking on loan 13 players.

So far it is not paying off.

One of those secured on big wages was former Newcastle striker Mitrovic, whose goals while on loan helped Fulham into the Premier League. He hit a post with a 47th-minute shot and scored and equaliser but overall Fulham looked like just what they are – a newly promoted side.

Fulham head coach Slavisa Jokanovic admitted so many new additions will need time to settle and adjust to the Premier League and it showed yesterday.

Jokanovic said: “This is the Premier League. It is tough. Problems like these are normal here.

“They scored a goal at the right moment for them but not for us. They showed the quality after that. They had the power and we couldn’t come back.

“We know where we are and can’t be surprised. They are a Champions League side, showed quality and we have to compare that. We are in a process. We showed a few quality things, but it is our problem and we need to put them right.

“We need to be positive, keep going, work harder. We had chances to score some goals, but the last 15 minutes we did not find the energy needed.”

Fulham did almost take a first-half lead when skipper Tom Cairney had French World Cup winner Hugo Lloris diving to his right to beat out a

29th-minute 25-yard shot, while Ryan Sessegnon had a 39th-minute shot blocked out by Lloris.

But overall Spurs relentlessly pushed forward, with the pace of Brazilian Lucas Moura being a real asset. He put Spurs ahead after 35 minutes when Trippier and Christian Eriksen worked the ball into the area and Calum Chambers only toed it out for Moura to blast in from 18 yards.

After Mitrovic had equalised for Fulham, Trippier repeated his World Cup heroics with another blistering free-kick in the 74th minute.

Although Tottenham were quite fortunate to leave Newcastle 2-1 winners on the opening day of the season, there were positives to take from this match despite their ground problems and their failure to sign a player during the last transfer window.

Spurs were a class act, having the ability to move the ball into dangerous areas and players to finish them off.

They also have Trippier repeating his World Cup performances.

Tottenham have won eight of their last nine Premier League meetings against Fulham and they weren ot about to lose that record here. Pochettino said of scorer Moura: “What a finish. He was amazing today getting around the pitch and pressing. He’s deserved that and that’s what he wants to do, score goals and keep his place in the

team.”
