Hornets Taylor made for Javi

- ■ by TONY STENSON

AMBITIOUS: Javi Gracia JAVI GRACIA wants to write his name in Watford folklore alongside the likes of club legend Graham Taylor.

The Hornets boss, 48, has vowed to lift the club’s first major trophy – even though he has never won anything before at any of the

NINE clubs he has previously managed.

Gracia’s contract ends next summer but he wants to stay with a club whose Italian owners are notoriously trigger-happy.

He said: “I think we can do a Leicester and shock people. I like to think so and I want to stay and be part of it.”

The Spaniard played for six clubs without lifting a trophy, while as manager he has gone to Greece, Spain and Russia in a bid to fulfil his ambitions.

Gracia, whose side travel to face Burnley today, said: “Of the clubs I have managed I won promotion to the first division but I never had a chance to win anything.

“I see this as my best chance now. I do not know if our best is enough to beat teams like Manchester City but we will try to win.

“We are confident we can win against Burnley and then we go from there.

“When you start a competition you have possibilities and we have a squad to play all the competitions with the chance to win them.”

Gracia, though, knows time is always against any manager at Watford and that the pressure to stay in the Premier League is immense.

He said: “The club is ambitious but you have to know what your objectives are. My mentality is to do my best to try to win all of the competitions.”

Gracia arrived in January on an 18-month contract and admits he is still learning.

He said: “The lessons from last season? It was a good experience. I needed to be working with the players to really get to know them and what is needed here.

“But I know football and do not know what will happen in future. The mentality is to do my best and try to enjoy every day.

“I want to stay a lot longer. I feel really good at this club and I would like to help Watford to improve their level and try to achieve higher objectives.”
