JOSE AFTER A LOT MOUR FOR MART

-

IT would have taken a lot for Manchester United to cash in on Anthony Martial before the Premier League transfer window closed – £87million in fact. Clubs interested in United’s French forward, 22, claim that was the fee they were quoted.

And presumably that is the amount a foreign club would have to pay this week for Martial (below) if they wanted to sign him before the European window closes on Friday. It is clear the forward is unhappy at United under manager Jose Mourinho and there have been claims the Old Trafford boss would be happy to see him sold – if the proceeds were made available to him for transfer business in January.

Martial’s agent Philippe Lamboley made it clear at the start of the summer that his client wanted a transfer.

But United will not allow Martial to move cheaply, having signed him from Monaco three years ago for a fee of £36m, potentially rising to £57m.

United originally valued him at £70m but, perhaps through interest from clubs like Paris St-Germain, Real Madrid, Tottenham and Chelsea, revised that figure in an upwards direction. Juventus were also interested before signing Cristiano Ronaldo from Real.

Martial remains popular with
