ANDY’S RATING: ★★★★★ In cinemas on Friday

COULD we be witnessing the birth of a new type of movie? Because this riveting thriller is the fourth film I’ve seen where the action plays out entirely on a computer screen. It’s also the best of the bunch. An ingenious opening sequence tells us the life story of a 16-year-old girl through online videos and social media posts.

This is Margot Kim, an outwardly happy (but as we’ll discover, secretly troubled) high school student, who lives in California with her protective father David (Star Trek actor John Cho).

When Margot fails to come home from a study group, David’s first instinct is to open her laptop and search through her internet history.

As the days go by, David teams up with a local detective to embark on a digital quest to find out what happened.

And yes, just like those two Unfriended movies, it all plays out on the screens of smartphones and computers.

Debut director Aneesh Chaganty also uses old school techniques like red herrings and twists to ratchet up the tension. But her greatest asset is her leading man. Cho is barely off the screen, but he gives this digital masterpiece heart and occasional flashes of humour.
