EGYPT ‘HOTEL DEATHS LINK’
Wife tragedy ‘same as Brit pair’
A MAN whose wife died on holiday in Egypt says the tragedy has worrying similarities to the death of another British couple there.
Clive Eversfield and wife Alison Sonnex were staying at a fivestar resort when they noticed a “strong smell” in their room.
The couple, inset, fell ill and were taken to hospital. Alison, 54, lost consciousness and died.
The tragedy happened during their Thomas Cook break at the Red Sea resort of Marsa Alam in April. Last month, fellow Brits Susan and John Cooper died after falling ill at a hotel in another Egyptian resort. Their daughter, Kelly Ormerod, reported that there had been a “strange odour” in their hotel room in Hurghada.
All three deaths were blamed on natural causes by the Egyptian authorities. But Thomas Cook said the Coopers’ deaths were unexplained and has launched an investigation. Now Mr Eversfield, of Ramsgate, Kent, claims the deaths of his wife and the Coopers have “common denominators” – and are being covered up by Egyptian officials.
He said: “It’s not a one-off. Three people who their relatives believed were fit and healthy have died.
“There are several common denominators – something is clearly wrong.”
He added: “I do not accept that my wife died of natural causes.
“She was only 54 and fit and healthy – there is no reason why she should have died. I think there was something in that room that caused us to fall ill.”
A full inquest into Alison’s death will be held this month. A Thomas Cook spokesman said: “The death was registered as natural causes, and we are fully supporting the coroner who is investigating.”
